The brick set that can rebuild (almost) any face

L'assortimento per ricostruire (quasi) qualsiasi volto

A LaterEgo statue runs on two engines. The first is the software that turns a photo into a buildable model — I'll tell that story another time. The second is less glamorous but just as decisive: which bricks to keep in stock.

You can't make a perfect copy of a face with about ten colors for skin and hair — so the goal isn't perfection, it's the closest possible resemblance. Every extra piece buys a little more fidelity, but also more complexity: one more box to buy, restock and count. Every piece you cut simplifies the warehouse but can cost you a detail. My job was finding the best balance between warehouse complexity and the result on the shelf.

There's no such thing as a perfect face on screen.

The 100-faces method

Instead of guessing, I ran about 100 different faces through the rebuild process, one at a time — different ages, features, hair, noses. Then I looked at which pieces showed up in almost every face, and which appeared just once. Every piece in the catalog has to earn its place.

The result: 230 SKUs. Enough to rebuild almost any face, few enough to manage, restock and check one by one.

The lesson, from someone who makes things: a product that goes to market is one you can remake, identical, on day 100 as on day 1.

A market product is one you can remake, identical, on the hundredth day as on the first. Repeatability is a strength, not a flaw.

Why a few colors are enough

Look at real faces and the skin and hair colors cluster into just over a dozen shades — and those cover most people. That let me keep a narrow palette without giving up fidelity (yes, you lose a little — and I'll tell you exactly how much another time). Deep stock on the colors you actually need beats dozens of half-empty boxes. Fewer colors, a more manageable warehouse, the same result.

A detail for the obsessive: we count by weight

Every box is labeled with its code, the piece name, the color, and the weight of a single piece and of a hundred. When we prepare a kit, we weigh the bricks instead of counting them by hand. It's the detail I'm proudest of.

All set. Just one thing missing: a face.

The warehouse is labeled, weighed and organized now: 230 SKUs, backed by 100 test faces. Every box is waiting for the same thing — a face to rebuild.
